What is this little [?] I see in stories?

It designates a glossary style link to Everything2. We use these to link things like acronyms or names when we think that they might be obscure enough that someone else might need some clarification.

How can I see old stories?

Slashdot has archived stories going back pretty much to the beginning of the site. You can access them by hitting the "older stuff" link on the main page or by searching for them in the database by using the search form at the bottom of the front page.

Why do I see Some Other User's Nickname in my Menu?

This is a short cut. Essentially, there is a tab on your user menu (appearing on many pages like Journals and Users) that shows the nickname and UID of the last user that you looked at. This is not a bug! This is a helpful shortcut so that you can hop back and forth between your friends information, and theirs.

How do I control the amount of content on my index?

Slashdot content is broken down into Sections like Apple or Book Reviews. Within each of these sections, content is further divided into what we call 'Main Page' and 'Sectional Content'. The Main Page is the stuff we think is the best. But we try to keep the number of articles on the main page to 15-20 or so articles. Some sections have more stories than that. So we pick some stories as "Sectional Content".

You have the ability to choose how much or how little content you want to see from each section. Further, you have th ability to choose if you want to view each type of article in 'Full Text' or 'Abbreviated' format.

Today on Slashdot, we default to having you see all Main Page content in Full Text mode, and all Sectional Content in the new 'Abbreviated' format. You can change these settings both globally, as well as on a per section basis using a tool usable from the left hand sectional menu, as well as from your user preference page. Each of these features a 'spectrum' of options. On the far right, you will see every single story posted to every section in full text. On the far left, you will see only main page stories, and even those only abbreviated. The break down is as follows:

  • Full, Full - Displays every single story we post, in full text.
  • Full, Abbreviated - The current default is to display the main page articles in full text, but to abbreviate all sectional content.
  • Abbreviated, Abbreviated - This setting abbreviates every story posted to the section.
  • Full, None - This setting most closely mimics the old Slashdot settings, where the main page stories were included up top, but the sectional stories were relegated to the sectional indexes.
  • Abbreviated, None - Abbreviate the main page content, and hide the sectional content.
  • None - Completely suppress this section. Hide it entirely from your index.
